How Big Should a Coffee Table Be?

How long, how tall and how far from the sofa, plus round or rectangular: the numbers for choosing a coffee table that fits, from Seville Home in Leawood, KS.

Most coffee tables that look wrong are not ugly. They are the wrong size, and it rarely shows until the table is home, because any table looks small on a showroom floor. People also tend to treat the question as one number, when it is really two decisions. A coffee table and a cocktail table are the same piece of furniture, by the way, and you will see both names here.

Size comes from the sofa: its length sets how long the table should be, and its seat sets how tall. Shape comes from the room: the floor you can spare and the seats around the table decide between round, rectangular and square. Settle the size first, then the shape, then check the result against the way you host.

How long should a coffee table be?

About two-thirds the length of the sofa.

At that length, everyone on the sofa can reach the table, and there is still room at each end to walk in and sit down. A much shorter table leaves the people at the ends reaching for it, while a longer one blocks the way in. Measure the sofa from arm to arm, then look for a table within a few inches of the answer.

Those three, along with the smaller Cumulus at 44 by 30 inches, run from 30 to 40 inches deep. If the right design comes in the wrong size, ask, because some are made in more than one. Cumulus comes in those two rectangles, and Century lists its Details Custom Ridge round anywhere from 18 to 56 inches across.

How far should a coffee table be from the sofa?

Leave 14 to 18 inches between the sofa and the table.

Think of it as a reach test. You should be able to set down a glass without standing, and still have room for your knees and for someone to step past. Chairs across the table can sit at the same distance, which keeps every seat in the group within reach.

An 84-inch sofa with a 56-inch table, drawn to scale. The gap on each side of the table is 14 to 18 inches, and the path around the group is 30 to 36 inches wide.

The other number to protect is the walkway. Keep main paths through the room 30 to 36 inches wide, and let them run around the seating, not through it. A standard sofa is about 37 to 40 inches deep, so add that to the gap and the table before you buy, and tape the footprint on the floor. Our guide to laying out a living room walks through the rest of the plan.

How tall should a coffee table be?

Level with the sofa seat or 1 to 2 inches below it.

Most sofa seats sit 18 to 20 inches off the floor, which points to a table 16 to 20 inches high. Measure your own sofa at the front of the seat cushion, because the difference between sofas is easy to feel when you lean forward for a drink.

Among the tables we compared, heights run from 15 to 19.5 inches. The Lexington Kenya round sits at 15 inches and the Artistica Cumulus at 18.5, the Woodbridge Broomfield stands at 19.5, and the Theodore Alexander Maxwell falls in the middle at 17. A low table suits a low, lounging sofa. On a higher seat, the same table leaves you reaching down for your glass.

Should a coffee table be round or rectangular?

Choose rectangular for a long sofa or a room short on floor from front to back, and round for a curved sofa or a group of chairs.

Length is only half of how a table fills a room. Theodore Alexander makes the Maxwell both ways, at nearly the same length, so it shows the difference clearly. The rectangle takes 32 inches of floor from front to back, and the round takes 54.

The same sofa at the same scale. The small round Maxwell takes 22 more inches of floor from front to back, so check it against your walkway first.

Round earns those inches in the right room. With no corners to catch a shin, it is easier to walk around in a tight group, and every chair sits at the same distance from it. It also echoes a curved sofa. Because a round is as deep as it is wide, the two-thirds rule stops helping. Start from the seats instead: keep 14 to 18 inches to each one, and the space left over is the largest round that fits. Full-size rounds among the tables we compared run from 40 inches across, on the large Fairfield Everett, to 60 inches, on the large Maxwell.

The shape follows the seats: the Woodbridge Broomfield round, 43.5 inches across, among four chairs, and the Lexington Holloway square, 51.5 inches on a side, inside the corner of a sectional.

Rectangles and rounds are not the only choices. A square suits a group with seats on three or four sides, and a soft, irregular outline, such as the Bernhardt Kaori at 52 by 41 inches, sits somewhere between the two.

What size coffee table goes with a sectional?

Size it to the open corner of the sectional rather than its full length, leaving 14 to 18 inches to the seats on both sides.

A sectional has two lengths, so the two-thirds rule has no single number to work from. Measure the open space inside the L, take off the gap on each side that faces a seat, and what remains is your table. Square and round tables tend to fit there best, because they face both arms of the L equally.

Size the rug at the same time. It should reach past the front edge of the sectional, so the table and the front legs all sit on it. Our guide to choosing the right rug size has the numbers.

Can you use two small tables or an ottoman instead of a coffee table?

Yes, as long as you treat the pair as one shape and keep the same gap from the sofa.

A pair of tables solves two problems: it fills a long sofa without one enormous top, and it can be pulled apart when guests arrive. The Fairfield Everett bunching tables come as a 40-inch round at 18.5 inches high and a 28-inch round at 16 inches, so the smaller one sits lower, beside the larger. The Four Hands Calder nesting set goes further, with a taller small table, 23.25 by 15.75 inches, that slides together with a larger one, 38 by 24 inches.

An ottoman brings a softer edge and doubles as extra seating, which helps in a family room. It works best when its top is close to the seat height of the sofa. The Huntington House 2019-55 ottoman is 48 by 30 inches and 18 inches high, about the size of a good rectangular table. Add a tray, because a glass needs somewhere flat to land.

What size coffee table is best for hosting?

Choose the largest table that still keeps the 14 to 18 inch gap and the 30 to 36 inch walkways open.

Over the holidays, the table holds plates, glasses and whatever is being passed, so top space counts. Round tables hold more than they seem to: the 54-inch Maxwell round has about 2,290 square inches of top, and the 55-by-32-inch Maxwell rectangle has about 1,760. The rectangle gives that back in floor space, and its long edge sits within reach of everyone on the sofa.

A few other things make hosting easier. A lower shelf, like the stone one on the Artistica Cumulus, gives the books and remotes somewhere to go when you clear the top. A pair of tables can move out toward guests in chairs. Before the party, walk the path from the door to the kitchen with a plate in each hand, and if you have to turn sideways, the table is too big or too close.

Common questions

How big should a coffee table be?

Aim for about two-thirds the length of the sofa, so an 84-inch sofa takes a table of about 56 inches. Set it 14 to 18 inches from the sofa, with its top level with the sofa seat or 1 to 2 inches lower.

How far should a coffee table be from the sofa?

Leave 14 to 18 inches between the sofa and the table. You can set down a glass without standing, and there is still room for your knees and for someone to step past. Keep main walkways around the seating 30 to 36 inches wide.

How tall should a coffee table be?

Level with the sofa seat or 1 to 2 inches below it. Most sofa seats sit 18 to 20 inches off the floor, which points to a table 16 to 20 inches high. Among the tables we compared, heights run from 15 to 19.5 inches.

Should a coffee table be round or rectangular?

Choose rectangular for a long sofa or a room short on floor from front to back, and round for a curved sofa or a group of chairs. A 54-inch round takes 22 more inches of floor from front to back than a 55-by-32-inch rectangle.

Can you use two small tables or an ottoman instead of a coffee table?

Yes. Treat a pair of tables as one shape and keep the same 14 to 18 inch gap from the sofa. An ottoman works too if its top is close to the height of the sofa seat, and a tray gives drinks a flat place to land.
